Butts Canyon Roadside

Funded By: County of Napa

Completed: June 2025

In June of 2025, 3.1 miles of roadside fuels were recently treated along a critical segment of Butts Canyon Road.

This corridor includes steep slopes and narrow shoulders, which can make both evacuation and fire response more difficult. By reducing roadside fuels, we’re improving visibility, clearance, and the overall defensibility of this important route.

In 2014, the Butts Fire started nearby, closing this section of road, The fire rapidly grew 2,600 acres in just 6 hours and ended up burning 4,300 acres over 8 days threatening over 300 homes and destroying several structures. Since then, vegetation has grown back, bringing renewed risk and the need for proactive treatment.

It may not look dramatic, but proactive fuels management like this helps reduce fire intensity and protect communities before disaster strikes. In addition, proactive fuels management creates safer firefighting environments for our first responders.
